Moving your blocks to other sites

Permalink Browser Info Environment
Hi Jordan

With the original Designer Content we used to build blocks in one c5 install and move them to other sites with all our custom templates ect in place.

Is this possible? we tried this but I noticed there is no controller in the file ect? We've created a few blocks now and custom templates that would really help to speed up our workflow and would love to have these as installable blocks :)

Thanks, Matt

Hi Matt,

Jordan is out today, but I'll take a stab at answering your question.

Currently you'll want to manually re-create the blocks in Designer Content Pro and then copy in your view files ("SITEROOT/blocks/yourblock/view.php").

In the near future (hopefully the next month), we'll be adding "import/export" functionally. This will allow you to export a block created in DCP and import/install it into another site running DCP.

At this time (and probably always because of the complexity), you'll need a copy of DCP running on any site you want a DCP-created block. They won't be stand-alone blocks in your "SITEROOT/blocks/" directory. However, you should find this "import/export" functionality very useful in your workflow.

Thanks,
Dan

Ok thats fine.

I have a request of you guys then. We made a rotating testimonial block in one site which would be ideal to role out across all our sites. (we build a lot of c5 sites) I'd love to just have it as a block we can just upload and install rather then having to install DPC on every site just for this one thing and then set it all up.

Would you be interested in generating this for us as a one off block that we could just install as a block without DCP installed?

I'm happy to pay for this... If this is something you could easily do and would be interested in doing can you let me now and we can agree a price?

Thanks, Matt :)

PS do you offer custom integration work?

Hi Dan,

when do you think you will have the import/export function working?

Hi Tim,
It's probably going to be at least a few weeks before I can get to adding that feature (I'm currently revamping the documentation, which is taking longer than expected). In the meantime, would it be helpful if I show you how you can copy the block files from one site to another? As long as the other site also has a Designer Content Pro license then it is relatively easy to copy the blocktype definitions over via FTP.
