How do you get the thumbnail to just be the first image of the collection.
Now, the user has to click on the thumbnail just to see that there are more photos they can see by clicking on the left or right arrows on the side?

This block is to popup an image or slideshow of images, it sounds like you want a carousel type block not a popup block.
