Thank for letting me know about that. It seems quite unusual that you're experiencing that. Most of the testing I've done has been with the default skins that are included with Mega Menu - especially for V8 and V9. The "modern" hamburger option offers a new range of styling and functionality which tends to work out of the box - but when using custom CSS, then some adjustments will likely need to be made.
The upside of the custom CSS feature is that your customizations are carried forward with new versions of MM. The only downside is that new/updated features (such as Modern hamburger) have new styling requirements that might not be reflected in your custom CSS. Some of the CSS files within the package were also changed, added and removed. So after making a backup of the package files, perhaps you can try deleting and uploading the new files (without uninstalling the package). This should give you a clean slate.
When in doubt, I suggest making a backup copy of your custom CSS and then using some of the default CSS code from the newest version of MM to re-build the menu. It's a more time-consuming option, but also ensures the custom CSS is more likely to be forward compatible with newer versions.
Naturally, your solution of using an older version of the menu also works. If you don't need the newer features, then the older version will continue to work for many years to come.
