Whole site loading slowly

I installed the latest version (v.2.0.4) of Megamenu but as soon as I installed it the whole site (including the dashboard pages) started loading very, very slowly (45+ seconds) where before it was loading in 3-4 seconds. As soon as I uninstalled the package, the speed when back to how it was before. Is there any way you can help me to troubleshoot this? Thank you!

Thanks for your message.

Based on the environment information you provided, it seems you don't have caching turned on at the moment:

# concrete5 Cache Settings
Block Cache - Off
Overrides Cache - Off
Full Page Caching - Off
Full Page Cache Lifetime - Every 6 hours (default setting).

I'd suggest trying to turn the block cache and overrides cache to see if there's a difference in loading speed.

It's strange that the dashboard also loads slowly because there's nowhere on there that the Mega Menu should be activated. Perhaps if the server is overworked from loading a menu on a large website (at the frontend), then the backend is also affected.

How many pages do you have on your site? If there are a lot of pages that don't (or don't need to) appear on the menu, then it's possible to hide all their children using a page attribute. This would cause the code to skip looping through those pages when it builds the HTML output.

One other troubleshooting tip would be to modify this file:
/packages/jb_megamenu/blocks/jb_megamenu/controller.php
Around line 116 there is a function called "cacheBlockOutput". Try to comment out this whole function - it's used to disable the block cache while the admin user is logged in to ensure you're always seeing the most up to date information.

Oh, one more thing I forgot to include in my previous reply... I noticed from your environment info that you're running PHP5.6 on your server. This can also have a significant affect on processing and loading times. Newer versions of ConcreteCMS are optimised for the latest versions of PHP which have a lot of performance benefits. Something work looking into.

Hi,

Thank you for our excellent support! We used a temporary menu for the client meeting but now implementing properly and everything is loading much more quickly with the block cache function commented out. I've also set it to only display the required pages. Unfortunately as it's an old site getting a new theme (but with a lot of custom functionality) we can't change the PHP version but I agree that would help if we could!

Also I did do a clean reinstall of the mega menu so that might have helped as well.
