Getting page types to show up

Hi, I'm trying to add a left_sidebar page to my site but it's not there by default. I saw that left_sidebar.php exists in the theme folder and added a page type for it with the handle left_sidebar, but when I try to create a new page with it, it still shows the full page layout. Any suggestions? Thanks!

You are referring to Page Template, not Page Types. By default there is only 1 Page Type, "Page" and it can use any of the Page Templates installed. When creating a enw page you will need to select the Page Template.
OR
You can create your own Page Type and force it to only use the Page Templates you want. This is really only useful if you want a different form during page creation.
