navigation with sub-menus on smartphone

HeyWater is a great theme and what is important to me is its responsive features. Currently my (test)site has 5 top-level items in the navigation and three of them have also sub-menus.
When collapse the menu on a tablet or iPhone and clicking (or tab) to open the menu I have noticed that it is very tricky - or almost impossible - to navigate to a top-level entry that is following a the sub-menu entry.
As soon as I move from the last sub-menu entry away the sub-menu items will collapse and everything below will move upwards and away from may pointer. Collapsing the sub-menus is ok (it saves you space for the more important items) but maybe have a short delay of about 0.5 to 1 second could solve this situation and helps a user to access the following top-level entry with any hassle.
In the attached screenshot it is almost impossible to select the "Events" menu item.
