extension after domain

Permalink Browser Info Environment
Okay, so on the homestretch now with the website. There is a visual hick up that occurs and I finally saw that it happens when an extension is added to the domain (see below). The extension doesn't always occur. Not sure why it occurs sometimes, but it makes the pages display strangely.

Without the extension, things seem to display the way I intend.

Can you tell me what that extension is and how to avoid it in the future?

I could eliminate the problem by adding a top and bottom graphic to my Flash file (you'll notice that I have designed so that a top, middle and bottom slide show within the viewable area, the middle being a Flash portfolio gallery). I could just make the top and bottom graphic part of my flash file.

Hi Joel,

great work, the site looks really nice :)

"#blockStyle285Main154" is the name of your second slide. You see, each slide has an ID. If you hover over the nav links, you should see in the status bar (at the bottom of the browser if you are using Chrome) the name of the slides. Also, if you right click on one of the links and open it in a new tab, then the URL with the name of the slide will be visible, and you'll be taken to that specific slide.

Anyway, I think this should not be an issue. I have visited your site using both URLs (http://www.joelkincaid.com/ andhttp://www.joelkincaid.com/#blockStyle285Main154)... and I can see no differences.

Are you logged in when you experience these issues (is the Concrete5 toolbar visible)? What browser and OS are you using? Also could you attach a screenshot next time you experience this?

Regards,

Jordi

Thanks Jordi,

I have viewed it on Macs (Safari, Firefox, Chrome) and PCs (IE). I get the same thing from those platforms and web browsers. And I get what you are saying about the IDs. I had seen that in the lower status bar earlier. But, when I clear my history in the web browsers and key in my domain, the first slide comes up (without the ID after my domain name), but when I click on the second slide, instead of rolling up, it just pops up - and with the ID in the web browser address bar (after my domain name). If I refresh (2x), the ID goes away and the site functions normally, with the sides rolling rather than popping up. And the biggest problem with them popping up is with my portfolio slides. I can eliminate some of the problem by just altering my flash file to accommodate my graphics (made of of the three slides that appear within the viewing area of the monitor), but I'm still going to have the "popping" in of slides rather than the nice rolling. I hope that's not confusing - a little hard to put into words.

Hi,

I have tested your site using several browsers and this is what I think is happening:

the first time you visit the site, it takes some seconds to load (about 8-9 seconds) because some of the files are pretty big (one of the flash files is about 4 MB). While the page has not finished loading, if you click on the links, the slides will pop up without a smooth transition. Once the page has fully loaded, the navigation works as expected (at least for me) without refreshing the browser.

So I'd try the following:

1. After emptying the cache, can you try visiting the page and waiting until it has fully loaded? (Just to make sure this is the problem. Once is has fully loaded, the links should work as expected.)

(Also, are you logged into the site when you experience this?)

2. If the problem is the page taking too long to load, I'd recommend trying to make it faster. This is good both for users and for SEO. Some things you could try:

- optimizing images and Flash files
- using a page preloader (so the page is not visible until it has fully loaded)
- using a lazy load plugin or a flash preloader (so that flash files and images are loaded after page load)

Hope this helps,

Jordi

Jordi,

Thank you very much for looking at this. I see now that I must have forgotten to optimize some of the gallery images before creating my Flash files - ugh! I went back an did a re-do of the 4 meg Flash gallery, getting it down to 1 meg. I will go through all my Flash docs and further opt the related images. I'm sure this is going to help a great deal. And yes, I will consider a preload for the page. Again, thanks so much!!! You're the best!!!

Have a great weekend.

Joel
