How do I add the custom pattern?

Hello
Every time I go to use the custom pattern option for the background or header I get a blank, white page.
What are the requirements for the image to make this work with custom patterns? for example I need an aluminum pattern (which would be AWESOME if you added it as an option!) I've made an aluminum pattern and tried it as a jpg, png and others - messed with the layers too. Not sure what's needed here to make this work?
