site wide background image

Hi all, I wanted to change the header top block to a sitewide one.
Sp i changed the Area to GlobalArea line in header.php.
This is now working fine and the block reads add to sitewide header top.
Problem starts when i want to add a background image to this (or colour). By going to design it gives me the option but image never displayed.
I want to point out also that i had on pages a header top content block wich disappeared from all pages when i changed the code to GlobalArea. (In case this helps)

In fact yes I did clear the cache.
Strange thing is that it works only in the second menu page correct.
