It would be pretty difficult to widen it. The menu bar, footer bar, and the feature area would have to be stretched to make it work. This might be possible for the menu and footer but the feature area is a static jpg that can't be widened without distorting it...
I'll take a closer look at it over the next few days but for now I would say - not a good idea.

I really won't even use the feature area, so if there's a way to widen the menu and footer that would do the trick for me.
